Le Cesine hasn’t always looked like it does today.

This vast marshland once formed part of an even bigger wetland which extended from Brindisi, in the north, to Otranto, in the south, and from the Adriatic coast as far inland as the residential areas of Vernole.

It was an unhealthy area where the presence of the malaria mosquito (Anopheles mosquito) caused significant health issues.

Moreover, the marsh impeded cultivation of the land and consequently reduced its economic value.

Some say that these characteristics gave rise to the area’s name “Le Cesine”, which they argue derives from the Latin “Seges”, which means “uncultivated area”.

However others believe that the name comes from the Latin verb “caedere” (to cut) which is used in the italian expression “bosco ceduo” and refers to the ancient practice of chopping down trees and burning woodlands to obtain cultivable and fertile lands.

At the end of the 19th century the idea of transforming this vast area spread.

The motivations behind the decision to reclaim this area were the desires to defeat malaria and obtain cultivable land. These were achieved principally through drainage of the land by means of a canal system and the planting of trees.

The canal system was made up of a dense network of channels connected to a principal canal or to the coastline lagoon.

This system enabled the water to drain into the sea.

Some wells were also created so as to conserve a sufficient amount of water that could be used if needed.

The trees species were chosen for their capacity to absorb the remaining water and make the soil suitable for cultivation and for the development of plants of the Mediterranean shrubland.

The hard work of many labourers, under the coordination of experts from the Emilia Romangna region (Ferrarian Reclamations), finally made the area cultivable and healthy.

The Land Reform, which took place at the beginning of the 1950s, established a new regime concerning the ownership of the land. Under this regime around 350 hectares of land were entrusted to the Puglia Region whilst the other 300 hectares were given to anyone who was involved in the works.

The management of the part entrusted to the Puglia region was then granted to a hunters’ association until the beginning of the 1970s.

The subsequent slaughter of around 5000 animals by this hunters’ association, combined with an increased awareness of the need to safeguard areas like Le Cesine, led to the creation of the nature reserve.

In 1971 in Ramsar, Iran, the 350 hectares belonging to the region, combined with the other 300, were declared a “Wetland of International Importance”.

Following the ratification of the Ramsar Convention in Italy in 1977, WWF Italy and the State Foresty Body (represented by Dr. Raffaele Congedo) started a major awareness campaign, so that significant protection could be given to the area.

Studies and research carried out or supported over the years by WWF opened Le Cesine up to the possibility of becoming both a SPA (Special Protected Area), due to the nesting of different animal species there, and a SCI (Site of  Community Importance), thanks to the presence of animal and plant species registered on various environmental lists concerning the area.

Le Cesine is an extraordinary environment for teaching about ecology and environmental awareness.

The Masseria

The Masseria (the manor farm), which is owned by the Region, is composed of various buildings constructed at different points in the past.

The oldest part is the Tower, which was built at the end of the 16th century and represented the military outpost of the area. It acted as a lookout post for the surveillance of the coastline and was positioned between the two towers of San Cataldo and Torre Specchia.

At the end of the 17th century, as the risk of raids from the sea ceased, the tower’s role as protector of the coastline disappeared.

The first part of the Masseria, or manor farm, was then erected and at the end of the 18th century the house of the manor farm keeper was added.

Thanks to recent works of restoration and extension, the Masseria of the Le Cesine has become a visitor centre, and, now provided with guestrooms and a rest stop, is an ideal destination for school outings, families and nature lovers.
